Maths Mastery Embedding and Consolidation Project 2021 to 2022 (continuation of Maths Mastery Project Group 2018 to 2020)

We, at Raunds Park Infants, are working hard to improve our Maths provision. We are excited to be a part of the East Midlands South Maths Hub's Maths Mastery project for both primary and EYFS. Over the next two years, we will be part of a research group attached to the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

Our lead teacher is Mr Fisher.

The aim of this is to teach for mastery – the idea that every child can achieve a deep and secure understanding of Mathematics.

We are using Power Maths to provide a curriculum that flows from one concept to another building up the children’s mathematical understanding.

Pupils are taught through whole-class interactive teaching; something which happens in Shanghai and other regions that enjoy particular success in Maths. This will ensure that all children can master concepts before moving to the next part of the curriculum sequence, allowing no pupil to be left behind.

If a pupil fails to grasp a concept or procedure, this is identified quickly and early intervention ensures the pupil is ready to move forward with the whole class in the next lesson.

Significant time is spent developing deep knowledge of the key ideas that are needed to underpin future learning. The structure and connections within the mathematics are emphasised, so that pupils develop deep learning that can be sustained.

We are excited about the prospects of developing our teaching of Maths and working closely with other schools (in Northamptonshire and Leicestershire) in the Teacher Research Group (TRG) guided by experts in Maths teaching.

We are also working closely with all other schools in the Nene Education Trust to further improve Maths.

We are certain that this alteration to our teaching will have a positive impact on the progress and achievement of our children in maths and give them the knowledge and skills for them to flourish in this subject in their future school careers and as adults.
